"A Reflection
On God"

Holy Great Lent

Compiled by
Father Demetrios Serfes

Now that all of us in the Eastern Orthodox Church continues our spiritual pilgrimage during Holy Great Lent, it's a time more then ever for us to reflect ourselves on God.  How do we spiritually reflect ourselves on God, during this time is by prayer. In doing these prayers we pray with giving our Lord God the needed praise, glory, honor and worship that is due to Him. At the same time in not only attending the Great Lenten services at Church, we can also at our homes reflect ourselves on God, and even while we work everyday, and when we come to our homes to rest.

Many of us know certain prayers by heart, and some of us can reflect on these prayers throughout the day, such as saying: "Lord, have mercy", or "God be merciful unto me a sinner", then we can also reflect on God by doing the Prayer of the Heart, also known as the Jesus Prayer: "O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon me a sinner."

It is of course our duty as Christians to harbor ourselves in prayer, it strengthens us, it keeps us by the grace of our Lord God, and in the end the spirit within ourselves is moved to a loving and pure union with our God!

We have the prayer books?  We have the prayer rope?  If we do not let us ask our parish priest where we can get a prayer book and the prayer rope?  Prayer books are now available for both adults and for children.  Let us open our prayer books and use the prayer rope, during the period of Great Lent, so after Lent is finished we can continue on with using both our prayers books and our prayer rope, since all of the time is a time to reflect on prayer and on our Lord God.

Let us remember good and faithful loving Christians that we can learn something from this period of Holy Great Lent, we can learn about prayer, and our reflection on our God.

May our Gracious Loving Lord God, hear your prayers, and feel your words of love for Him, and in the end behold His Grace, and His joy in His Glorious Resurrection.
